Misleading Statements from CSD

CSD stated previously in their bond fliers, that the new construction would not be for the Charter students. However, CSD “open enrolled”  470+ Charter students into our district. This decision led to the overcrowding in our buildings.  Select here for specific details.

Misleading About the Costs / Phases

The numbers CSD has discussed in board meetings and hand-outs vs. what they are now wanting/planning. Select here for a breakdown.

3X The Square Footage of the First Bond

Randy Trani stated at the February 17, 2016 board meeting, referring to the MS facility need: We (he & the board) said we need 42,900 SF + remodeling the existing 15,000 SF middle school so total is 57,000 SF student space need. And another 2,000 SF district staff space need. (totals 59,000sf) Later in the same meeting he said: ….and the HS we want is 74,700 SF” (Minus gym space) … If this is the case, the total “wanted square footage” is: 133,700 SF where we currently use 68,400 SF.

This is an overall district expansion of 65,300 SF.  The first Bond (NOV of 2013) asked voters for a 20,000 SF building for a new HS. This new “want” is more than three times the SF of the first bond “ask”.

Here is a link to the notes of this meeting from the audio recording.

The Past Three Bond Elections

See here for the official election results for the past three bonds in Corbett. ( Note that the November 2014 School Bond was 8.5 Million and not 8.1 million.)

4 X The Square Footage

Randy Trani stated at the February 17, 2016 board meeting, referring to the MS facility need: We (he & the board) said we need 42,900 SF + remodeling the existing 15,000 SF middle school so total is 57,000 SF student space need. And another 2,000 SF district staff space need. This is an overall district expansion of 65,300 SF. Currently we use about 15,000 SF in the middle school… So this is more than four times the square footage currently in use at the middle school.

Another Charter

  • Also note in the above Screen Print from the official minutes that the Superintendent is again stating that CSD is not funded the same as other schools. This is false. The funding formula is the same for all schools in Oregon. From the TSCC: “The Allocation is each District’s General Purpose Grant. The per student amount is the same for all districts.” Oregon is actually known for its balanced funding formula.

 How many new buildings?

The Superintendent has suggested that CSD needs 2 and maybe three new buildings if you consider their last few bond attempts and wanting one for the STEM school.

In February 2016 – board members question RT’s list of priorities when he had his idea for a middle school listed at 50,000 + sf as a high priority. Other board members said they would prefer to go back to what we asked for in the first bond (A building for 20,000sf was the size they asked for in the first bond) so that other campus-wide safety and ADA issues could be addressed.

Listen to the Superintendent for yourself: http://corbettpost.com/csd/priorities-take-a-listen/

One of the reasons CSD wanted a separate building for the STEM school in past Bond attempts (a “school” that the State of Oregon revoked) is because they could try and recapture that $500,000-$650,000 in funding we have now lost. CSD also had to repay funds to the state.

Select here for details about this and how the Superintendent pushed the board to Open this STEM and the result was the loss of half a million dollars a year to our district.

Audio Recordings…

  • Audio Recordings of these recent meetings may be added here soon…. We are working on comparing the audio to what makes it into official minutes (and what gets left out or changed) to share with the public. Check back if you are interested.
  • Keep in mind it has been requested many times over the years (in writing and by past board members) that the Corbett School district record and provided transcription of their meetings. They have refused.
  • Thanks in large part to Annette Calcagno and Victoria Purvine (two past board members) the district now uses BoardBooks (online archive for meetings/agendas/official minutes etc). So some of these things are being better attended to than in the past 15 years.
