National Ranking?
National Ranking is actually based largely on the total number of Advanced Placement tests taken in our high school (9-12) divided by a small graduating class. During the years that Corbett ranked the highest, the criteria had nothing to do with how well students performed on those tests. All students (grades 9-12 take these AP tests). The district has purchased over 1,000 AP tests during a single year before..... We even require Special Needs students to take these AP classes/tests.Read more here.
Small School Funding?
In 2015 CSD lost their small school funding. CSD created a STEM School (Science Technology Engineering and Mathmatics) to replace the Charter school (to help divide the numbers on the high school campus into two schools - to preserve the funding...)
However, the State revoked our small school funding as they did not see enough separation to qualify as two schools. Both Charter and STEM students shared the same classrooms (at the same time ) with the district students.
It also seems CSD reported our 9th graders (on paper) at the middle school for some period of time.
More on this here.
What is a “resident”?
The term "resident student" may mean students that do NOT actually live in Corbett. This is due to the change in laws and HB3681. This bill provides that students are considered "residents" of the district in which they attend school, as long as they are accepted. They do not have to live there. Corbett open enrolled 476 students in early 2014. Most from the Charter School when they evicted them from most of their classrooms. More here.
Interesting Facts
At CSD, there are no letter grades until high school and at the high school we do not assign D's or F's. The district leadership believes in their "continuous progress model" to the point that the Superintendent has said that "If a student has made progress, and proven to their teacher they have tried their best, CSD will not stop any student from graduating." The School Board also voted NOT to notify parents each year how their students were doing compared to state averages. (Our district ranks about average compared to similar schools based on State assessments). Oregon ranks about 40th Nationally.
